The All India University Powerlifting Championship 2025 was formally inaugurated today at the University of Kashmir by the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma. The prestigious event, held in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities, brings together over 1200 top athletes representing nearly 150 universities from across the country.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Professor Nilofer Khan. Prominent dignitaries in attendance included VC of Central University of Kashmir, Professor Ravinder Nath, VC of IUST, Professor Shakeel A. Romshoo, and VC of Cluster University Kashmir, Professor Mohammad Mubeen.
In his address, Minister Satish Sharma lauded the University of Kashmir for hosting a tournament of such scale and importance. “This championship is not just a display of strength, but a powerful symbol of inclusivity, equality, and sporting excellence,” he said.
He added that the enthusiastic participation of athletes reflects the growing commitment and discipline among India’s youth toward fitness and competitive sports. “Powerlifting,” he noted, “is more than just a physical contest—it’s a test of inner resilience, mental strength, and determination. It teaches us that even the heaviest burdens can be overcome with perseverance and consistent effort.”
Highlighting the government’s focus on the development of sports, Sharma stated that Jammu and Kashmir has seen a resurgence in sporting activities in recent years. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening the sports infrastructure—from grassroots participation to elite-level training—under the visionary leadership of the Chief Minister.
The Minister also credited initiatives like Khelo India, the Fit India Movement, National School Games, and University-level championships for laying the foundation of a stronger, healthier, and more confident India.
The championship is expected to witness intense competition over the coming days, as athletes vie for top honors while showcasing the values of sportsmanship, strength, and unity.
