Tensions flared in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly<\/strong> on Monday as members of the ruling coalition<\/strong>\u2014including the National Conference (NC), Congress, CPI(M)<\/strong> and Independent MLAs<\/strong>\u2014staged a protest outside the House over the Waqf (Amendment) Act<\/strong>, following a noisy adjournment of the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd34 The MLAs held a dharna at the Assembly’s entry gate<\/strong>, voicing strong opposition to the BJP-led Central Government<\/strong> and the Speaker\u2019s refusal to allow a discussion on the controversial amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201cThe BJP resorted to manhandling and raised religious slogans in the House. We reminded them this is a legislature, not a wrestling ring,\u201d<\/em> NC MLA Altaf Kaloo<\/strong> told reporters.
He said their adjournment motion demanding a discussion on the Act was dismissed without due consideration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaloo questioned the Speaker’s stance, drawing comparisons with Tamil Nadu.
\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201cEven in Tamil Nadu, a resolution was passed on Waqf issues where Muslims make up only 6%. Why can\u2019t there be an open discussion here, in a Muslim-majority region?\u201d<\/em> he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u26a0\ufe0f Escalation and Scuffle in the House<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Earlier inside the Assembly, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone<\/strong> held a banner reading “Waqf Amendment Bill is not acceptable to us\u201d<\/em>, and accused the BJP of being \u201canti-Mahatma Gandhi\u201d and \u201csupporters of Nathuram Godse\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These remarks triggered an angry reaction from BJP legislators, who rushed towards the Well of the House<\/strong>, resulting in pushing and shoving<\/strong> between Lone, Congress MLA Iftikhar Ahmed<\/strong>, and BJP members.
\u26a0\ufe0f The situation was brought under control by watch and ward staff<\/strong>, who intervened to prevent a physical clash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201cHad the security not intervened, they would have killed me,\u201d<\/em> Lone later alleged, calling it \u201can attack on me\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPI(M) legislator M Y Tarigami<\/strong> urged political and civil society groups across the UT to unite against what he called the BJP\u2019s divisive agenda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201cWe appeal to the people of Jammu as well. BJP may attempt to communalize the issue, but we must stand together,\u201d<\/em> Tarigami said during the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd01 BJP Hits Back, Accuses NC of Inciting Sentiments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma<\/strong> condemned the protest, accusing the NC<\/strong> of trying to \u201cstoke religious sentiments\u201d<\/strong> for political gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udde8\ufe0f \u201cThis disruption was unconstitutional. The Speaker acted fairly, but the NC is politicizing a settled issue just to incite unrest in the Valley,\u201d<\/em> Sharma said.
He further alleged hypocrisy, saying NC MPs were \u201csilent in Parliament\u201d<\/em> when the Bill was passed but were now \u201cstaging drama in the Assembly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
