A man and his young daughter lost their lives in a tragic incident today as fierce winds swept across the Kashmir Valley, causing widespread damage and plunging several areas into darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fatal incident occurred in the Gadarchowgan Keller<\/strong> area of south Kashmir\u2019s Shopian<\/strong> district, where Reyaz Ahmed<\/strong> and his daughter Sabia<\/strong> were collecting household items outside their home. A large tree, uprooted by sudden gusts of wind, collapsed on them, fatally injuring both. Locals said the tree fell without warning, highlighting the force and unpredictability of the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Valley experienced its strongest winds late Sunday<\/strong>, with gusts recorded in nearly every district. The Meteorological Department<\/strong> had earlier issued an advisory predicting wind speeds of 40\u201360 kmph<\/strong> along with thundershowers.
\u201cThe strong winds and temperature rise are due to a western disturbance,\u201d said Pritam Singh<\/strong>, a MeT official. He warned that winds could persist through Monday evening<\/strong>, urging residents to avoid outdoor activities, especially near tin rooftops or trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singh further cautioned about a potential heatwave<\/strong> from May 21 to 27<\/strong>, advising the public to stay updated through official bulletins and take necessary precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widespread Destruction Across the Valley<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The storm wreaked havoc across multiple districts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Electric poles, tin roofs, hoardings, and trees<\/strong> were brought down in several towns, including Srinagar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • In Soura<\/strong>, a communication tower collapsed onto a road, and the minaret of Jamia Masjid in Batpora, Chadoora<\/strong>, was damaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • At least five people were injured<\/strong> in Srinagar<\/strong> and Anantnag<\/strong> due to flying debris.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • In Pampore<\/strong>, a centuries-old Chinar tree<\/strong> was uprooted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Apple orchards<\/strong> in Budgam, Tangmarg<\/strong>, and Baramulla<\/strong> suffered significant damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Several vehicles and structures<\/strong> were crushed by falling trees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Power and water supply<\/strong> were disrupted due to damaged transmission lines and pumping stations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Despite the extensive damage, officials say restoration efforts are well underway. According to the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL)<\/strong>, about 98% of the 33KV transmission network<\/strong> has been restored.
    \u201cOut of 1,295 feeders, over 1,150 are currently operational,\u201d a senior official confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Disaster response teams<\/strong> have been deployed across affected regions to clear debris and restore essential services. The Divisional Commissioner<\/strong> noted that the restoration work is being conducted \u201con a war footing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fire Safety Advisory Issued Amid Rising Temperatures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    In light of the expected heatwave, the Fire and Emergency Services Department (Srinagar Command)<\/strong> has issued a fire safety advisory. Station in-charges have been directed to increase preparedness and raise public awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Citizens have been advised to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Remove dry leaves from rooftops and premises<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Avoid overloading electric sockets<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Switch off electrical appliances when not in use<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Take extreme caution while cooking or using flammable materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Farmers have also been urged to monitor stubble burning<\/strong> and avoid unsafe disposal practices.
