On September 26, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah<\/strong> expressed his dismay over the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk<\/strong>, calling it unfortunate and accusing the BJP-led NDA government of reneging on its commitments. Abdullah spoke to reporters during the inaugural ceremony of the third Junior Asian Pencak Silat championship.<\/p>\n

Abdullah stated, \u201cThis (Wangchuk’s arrest) is unfortunate. The Central government\u2019s actions against him since yesterday hinted at something like this occurring.\u201d His remarks highlight the growing tensions surrounding Wangchuk\u2019s advocacy for the rights of Ladakhis, which escalated following recent violent protests in the region.<\/p>\n

Wangchuk, a prominent member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and an active campaigner for statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion for Ladakh, faced arrest shortly after protests that resulted in four fatalities and around 90 injuries. The specific charges laid against Wangchuk remain unclear as of now.<\/p>\n

The Union Home Ministry held Wangchuk accountable for the unrest, suggesting that his actions contributed to provoking the violence. This arrest aligns with the ongoing tensions as local groups, including LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), have fought for improved governance and recognition from the central government.<\/p>\n

In his address, Abdullah recalled prior promises made to the people of Ladakh, particularly before the Hill council elections in 2020. He noted how a Union minister had engaged with the populace, who initially planned to boycott the elections, to encourage participation.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromises were made to make people contest and participate in the elections,\u201d Abdullah stated. \u201cNot only did they participate in large numbers, but they also helped the BJP secure victory. Yet, these promises remain unfulfilled, much like our situation,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister pointed out that the expectation for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood seemed to be linked to the BJP’s electoral fortunes. \u201cThe people of our Union Territory actively participated in the elections with the understanding that statehood would be restored after the assembly elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Abdullah challenged the government\u2019s rationale, questioning whether the delay in restoring statehood stemmed from the voters not supporting BJP candidates. \u201cIf that is the case, they should clearly state that until the BJP forms the government in Jammu and Kashmir, statehood will not be granted,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

When addressing queries regarding comments made by Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the J&K assembly, Sunil Sharma<\/strong>, who accused Abdullah of justifying violence in Ladakh, Abdullah countered by stating that the BJP MLA consistently shifts blame onto others. His response reflects the polarizing political climate surrounding the ongoing protests and the treatment of activists in Ladakh.<\/p>\n

The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk has sparked widespread discussions on social media and among advocacy groups, highlighting the issues of governance and representation in Ladakh.
