J&K Police Constable Arrested in Gujjar Youth Killing

A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable, Pawan Singh, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killing of a Gujjar youth, Mohammad Parvez, during a police shooting incident on July 24 near Sure Chak village. This significant development brings hope for justice following strong community protests against the police’s handling of the case.

Mohammad Parvez, a 21-year-old from Niki Tawi, was shot during an alleged encounter, which the police claimed involved a drug peddler. However, the Gujjar community vehemently rejected this narrative, arguing that Parvez was an innocent victim of a “fake encounter.”

The incident ignited widespread protests, prompting political leaders, including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, to condemn the police actions and call for an impartial inquiry.

In response to the turmoil, the Jammu and Kashmir Police established a special investigation team (SIT) to delve into the matter. Additionally, a magisterial probe was initiated to ensure accountability and transparency in the investigation process. Following the SIT’s findings, constable Pawan Singh was arrested and charged under section 105 of the BNS (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), indicating the seriousness of the allegations against him.

The police had already suspended Singh and another officer, head constable Baljinder Singh, shortly after the incident occurred as a precautionary measure while investigations were undertaken.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed Singh’s arrest, asserting, “This is a crucial step toward justice. It is a reminder that no one, not even those in uniform, is above the law.” She emphasized that accountability is essential for restoring public trust in the police force.

Mufti paid tribute to Parvez, calling him an innocent individual whose tragic loss resonates deeply within the community. “This arrest offers a glimmer of hope that justice may still be served, even if too late,” she remarked.

Highlighting the importance of the investigation, she acknowledged the dedicated efforts of SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh, and IGP Jammu in ensuring a thorough inquiry, stating, “Hope now the judicial process takes its course and that Parvez, silenced in life, finds justice at last.”

The events surrounding Mohammad Parvez’s death reflect broader societal concerns regarding police conduct and the treatment of marginalized communities in Jammu and Kashmir. As the investigation unfolds, the emphasis on accountability from law enforcement remains paramount to preventing further tragedies.
