Omar Abdullah to Grant 5 Marla Land to Flood-Affected Families

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today announced that the government will provide five marlas of land each to all flood-affected families rendered homeless due to devastating flash floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative aims to help these families rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods.

Abdullah shared this news during an interaction with residents of Duggain in Billawar, a region severely impacted by recent flooding. He had earlier conducted an aerial survey of the most affected areas alongside local MLA Bani, Dr. Rameshwar Singh, to assess the damage firsthand.

“The year 2025 has brought immense devastation to Jammu and Kashmir—from a dry spell in March-April to incessant rains and landslides in August-September,” said Abdullah, underlining the unprecedented destruction. He noted that from Kathua to Kupwara, the distress has been overwhelming.

Highlighting the broad impact of the natural calamity, the Chief Minister described how over 350 bridges and approximately 2,000 km of roads suffered extensive damage. Additionally, thousands of hectares of farmland have been ruined along with countless standing crops, affecting both government and private infrastructure.

Given the significant challenges in restoring the region, Abdullah urges the Central Government for a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package. “Our people need immediate support as they rebuild their lives,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Abdullah’s visit also included assessments of isolated regions in Kathua. His inspections aimed to grasp the full extent of the damage. Following this, he held a meeting with district administration officials, including Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma, urging them to tour affected areas and compile detailed reports for effective management and rehabilitation.

Dr. Rameshwar Singh, representing Bani, reiterated the extensive damage faced by the area, particularly due to landslides from continuous rains. He disclosed that in villages like Moar, Najote, and Kanthal-Majra, numerous families have completely lost their land and property, necessitating urgent government intervention.

Singh advocated for the allocation of five marlas of land for these families, alongside other pressing matters such as the urgent repairs needed for the Jalana Bridge, and the delayed work on educational institutions like High School Lohai and the upgradation of High School Sadrota. Moreover, he requested amnesty from KCC loans and electricity bills for families that have faced catastrophic losses.

The Chief Minister assured residents that the government takes their needs seriously and will review all demands diligently to support those affected by the floods.

This initiative marks a critical step in the rehabilitation of flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for rebuilding lives and restoring hope in the affected regions.
