J&K: Key to India’s Journey toward Destination 2047

Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) holds the potential to be a torchbearer in India’s transformative journey toward Destination 2047 during the launch of ATL Sarthi and the Frontier Region Programme on October 25 at the University of Kashmir.

Speaking to a gathering of students and officials, Dr. Singh asserted that as India’s economy rises from fourth to third global ranking, the contributions will stem from previously underutilized regions like J&K. He noted that this region has gained significant attention and resources only since PM Narendra Modi took office in 2014, which has positively influenced its economic and social landscape.

Dr. Singh described J&K as an area rich in untapped resources, including its majestic Himalayas and abundant rivers. He remarked that initiatives spearheaded by the government, such as the Aroma Mission, have enabled the region to capitalize on its natural assets, thus framing J&K as a crucial player in India’s innovation-driven economic future.

He celebrated the launching of the ATL Sarthi initiative, highlighting it as a milestone for both Kashmir University and the broader strategy to integrate J&K into India’s growth narrative. “This is a dual celebration,” he said, noting the significance of Kashmir University in engaging J&K as a mainstream participant in national growth.

Dr. Singh announced the establishment of 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in J&K as part of the Frontier Region Programme, which forms the largest share of 2,500 labs sanctioned for such regions, backed by an investment of ₹100 crore. These labs will provide school students access to advanced tools in robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence, promoting innovation from a young age.

As the Union Minister continued, he elucidated how India’s economic ascent over the past decade has primarily stemmed from technology-led sectors such as space, biotechnology, ocean exploration, and Himalayan resources. The minister pointed out that India’s space economy has experienced rapid growth, soaring from almost negligible to $8 billion and projected to reach up to $45 billion within the next decade.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors, Dr. Singh stated, “To sustain growth, we must bring private players into our initiatives. Programs like InSpace in the space segment and BIRAC in biotechnology showcase successful structured collaborations.”

Dr. Singh elaborated on J&K’s evolving role in fostering startups through initiatives like the Aroma Mission and floriculture, contributing to approximately 3,500 lavender-based startups. He emphasized that young entrepreneurs are returning from corporate jobs to pursue business ventures in these sectors, creating diverse opportunities that transcend traditional government employment.

In discussing the region’s innovation potential, the minister highlighted that 50 J&K students ranked among the top thousand in the nationwide School Innovation Marathon, a testament to the growing talent pool. He encouraged students and parents to dismantle the misconception that successful startups only thrive in metropolitan areas, noting that nearly 50% of the nation’s startups originate from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

“The students in these tinkering labs will be in their prime working years as we discuss India@2047. They will emerge as torchbearers for a developed India, and through them, J&K will naturally lead on this national journey,” Dr. Jitendra Singh concluded.

The event also saw participation from prominent figures, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Education Minister Sakina Masood, University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, and AIM Mission Director Dr. Deepak Bagla, all underscoring the collaborative spirit needed for J&K’s growth.
