Police have arrested a man named Sunit alias “Katua,” a resident of Nagla Hardayal in the Mant area of Mathura, for allegedly issuing a death threat to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath through a viral social media video.
In the video, Sunit brandished a pistol and threatened to shoot the Chief Minister by September 25 before planning to take his own life. His disturbing declaration sparked immediate concerns about public safety.
He exhibited a pistol magazine during the recording, ominously claiming it contained nine bullets and threatened to “fire all nine.” Sunit stated he previously filed a complaint with the CM’s office but felt frustrated by the lack of action, stating this drove him to threaten the Chief Minister as an extreme measure.
On Friday evening, police arrived at his residence to execute the arrest. Sunit, however, locked himself inside and fired shots from the third floor, threatening to shoot himself. After a tense standoff lasting nearly an hour, police successfully subdued him and arrested the suspect. They seized a pistol and live cartridges from his possession.
Local residents reported that Sunit had been experiencing mental distress and often voiced his personal problems aggressively. Many described his behavior as increasingly unstable in the months leading up to this incident. Witnesses reported concern for his well-being as well as for public safety.
The video containing the threat circulated widely on social media, prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities. They are currently investigating how Sunit obtained the weapon and the exact motivations behind his alarming threats.
A case has been registered against Sunit under severe charges, including criminal intimidation, attempt to incite violence, and illegal possession of arms. Officials confirmed that they take these threats to public figures seriously and will pursue all legal avenues necessary.
