On September 27, India’s First Secretary at the UN, Petal Gahlot, revealed that the Pakistan military had “pleaded” for a cessation of fighting during the recently concluded Operation Sindoor. This was part of a response to remarks made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the UN General Assembly, where he highlighted the need for dialogue and credited former President Donald Trump with preventing war between the neighboring nations.
Gahlot, addressing the General Debate of the 80th UNGA session, emphasized India’s position asserting that no third party can resolve the disputes between New Delhi and Islamabad. He stated, “This Assembly witnessed absurd theatrics this morning from the prime minister of Pakistan, who once again glorified terrorism that is so central to their foreign policy.”
During his address, Sharif discussed Pakistan’s readiness for a “composite, comprehensive and result-oriented” dialogue with India, particularly criticizing New Delhi’s actions regarding Kashmir. He claimed, “Our dialogue should focus on resolving all outstanding issues between the two countries.”
Sharif went on to commend Trump’s influence, saying, “In recognition of President Trump’s wonderful and outstanding contribution to promote peace in our part of the world, Pakistan nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. This is the least we could do … I think he truly is a man of peace.”
Operation Sindoor commenced on May 7, following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians. India launched this operation targeting terror infrastructure situated in Pakistan and the regions it controls. The operation reflects India’s ongoing strategy to combat militancy that poses a direct threat to its national security.
India has been vocal about its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region. Authorities reiterated that the cessation of hostilities was agreed upon after direct talks between the military’s Directors General of Military Operations, underscoring a mutual interest in de-escalation.
