DRDO Launches Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based System

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher on September 29, 2023. This historic test occurred under a full operational scenario, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in modern warfare.

The Agni-Prime missile is a next-generation weapon designed to cover an impressive range of up to 2,000 km, equipped with an array of advanced features. According to the Defence Ministry, the successful launch signifies India’s commitment to enhance its defense capabilities significantly.

The first-of-its-kind launch utilized a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, capable of navigating the rail network without preconditions. This innovative system introduces cross-country mobility and allows for rapid launch times, thereby reducing visibility to potential adversaries. High-ranking scientists from DRDO and officers from the Strategic Forces Command witnessed the event. The road-mobile version of the Agni-P missile has already entered service after a series of successful trials, ensuring operational readiness.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended congratulations to DRDO, SFC, and the armed forces for this significant achievement. His statement emphasized that this successful flight test places India among a select group of nations capable of developing canisterised launch systems from the rail network.

“Congratulations to DRDO and the Strategic Forces Command for the successful launch of the Agni-Prime missile. This achievement demonstrates our advancements in defense technology and our commitment to ensuring national security,” Singh noted in his remarks on social media.

Additionally, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO commended the efforts of all participating teams for their contributions to this successful test. The Agni-Prime missile reinforces India’s position as a formidable power in the international arena.
